I had a bit of a scare with my old machine last fall the rad sprung a leak and by the time I noticed it, it had started running rough, for the most part I thought I cooked it, so I parked it for the winter and this spring it started right up but it has issues, I have full power as soon as it starts but it dies out till it eventually stalls, I noticed air bubbles in my fuel filter, cant be good I reckoned, and the new lift pump I put on last year appears to be the culprit, at least something is not right with it and its leaking, but while I am at it there are a few things I have been ignoring.

I have a fuel leak by one of the injectors, I never took one off, not sure if they pop out or thread in, no clue what so ever, I am assuming there are some o rings there, does anybody know better, is there a rebuild kit avail

came across this a moment ago http://www.external_link.com/Fuel-Injector-p/113965.htm, if these are the injectors they are surprisingly affordable I may just as well replace them.

You may have injection pump trouble, not injectors. Get it running and when it starts to loose speed and power loosen the two screw timing cover on the pump side. If the speed and power get better while the housing fuel pressure is released then the pump needs repair. The weight retainer ring is failing and plugging the return valve. Don't gut the valve and keep running, it will just get much more expensive to repair when the head seizes and the drive shaft breaks.

I read about that, and the symptoms are very similar to the ones described, I also came across a thread that mentioned a leak on the suction side of the lift pump will do the same thing, I get air in the fuel filter, so I need to deal with that first, I am pretty sure that is not right.

but deffinately the injection pump will be next, I read about the glass ball check valve and such.

I plan to keep this machine so definitely I want to go through this and get it done, the thing about the injectors is that one of them is leaking and fuel is dripping on the side of the engine, it has been like that since I got it and I have put it off because I needed to use it, well at this time I might as well look at that too.

one of them in particular it appears the metal tab that holds it in place is bent and is leaking, question was is it as simple as taking the bolt off and they pull straight out, I never messed with diesel injectors before so I figured I better ask

for some odd reason I can not see my original post in the modern view, so here it is below

a very common problem with fuel in john deeres. Check your fuel line from your tank to the pump and see if you have a full and free flowing line. If it is slow give it a little shot of air back into the tank and see what you get. A hand pump works good or you can do it if you don't mind the taste of fuel. Losen the cap. Ther is a small filter in the bottom of the tank. You can't see it but it's there if somebody didn't take it out. Dirt collects there and restricts the flow. ( the down side of refueling with 5gallon cans. ) The fix. Tank the tank off and clean it. 2. Drain the tank & reduce your shop vac hose down and suck out the dirt. 3. Keep your tank as full as possible the weight of the fuel helps the flow & the extra fuel keeps the dirt mixed up. This is more likely to happen when your fuel gets below a quarter tank. Try this before you start tearing things apart. Very common. Good luck.

that is my plan. at firs I freaked out because this happened at about the same time the rad filler neck cracked at the seam, not even sure how long that had been going on for I believe I came across it by chance when I was checking fluids, I happened to be under the gun at the time so I put a gallon of coolant in it and kept working, boy was it steaming up, but I figured I'd keep an eye on the temp gauge and keep it topped off to get through the day, the next day I soldered it and refilled it , but about that same time I noticed a lack of power, winter came and I parked it, this spring started right up but as I put it to work I noticed its loosing power, and if I kept at it would eventually stall.

I was thinking I fudged it up last fall and it overheated and I cooked something, feeling very guilty, but than I could see the fuel filter through the cab and I noticed lots of air in it swirling around, on closer inspection, the new lift pump I put in it last year showed a crack on the output side and I could see it leaking too, my fuel lines are copper and the one from the tank to the lift pump is at least 2 pieces.

so I figured maybe I did not overheated it, maybe its just a fuel issue that coincidentally got worse at about the same time, I got a full tank on it now so I guess I'll be siphoning it , start at the tank, I got me a new lift pump just because, and I'll see about some new copper line, start with that and move on down the line, we'll see if I need to tear into the injection pump or not.

I still want to fix those injector leaks while at it they have been bothering me since I got it, is it straight forward pulling the injectors? does the dealer sell a oring kit? how do I go about that?

well I didn't have a chance to reply but my backhoe is doing fine, I went to tear into it and I actually had to backtrack the fuel lines to the tank didn't even know where that petcock was, I don't believe I ever messed with it and I had this backhoe for a few years now, well I go to shut it off and I could only get a 1/4 turn on it, thinking oh no!!! the valve is stuck I am going to have to syphon a full tank, so I go to turn it the other way and I got a few good turns out of it, that's interesting, so I opened and closed it a few times and just like that the tractor runs fine, go figure,

I know I changed the lift pump last year but I had it for some time and was putting it off till I ran it out of fuel at one point where I figured I might as well put it on and change the filter too, the old one was leaking, I wonder if the previous owner had the tank shut off and just barely cracked it when he sold it to me, ad it ran till a piece of dirt plugged it up, that's a relief, coincidentally this happened at about the same time I had some rad problems, for a minute I thought I fried it.

now I still want to deal with that leaky injector, but I have no idea what's involved removing and resealing it, just by looking at some pictures of new ones, looks like a bolt holds it in place and it should pop out, does the dealer sell a service kit? is it a gasket or an oring of sorts? any of you know better?
