Evening folks , responded to craigslist ad . Decent shape but losing coolant . Starts
with ether , runs . Asking $3500 obo . Guessing head gasket . How are parts availability
and reliability ? Assuming cash offer he will come down , he wants it gone . Any input
would be appreciated , thanks.

I have an H4 (gas) motor is specif to that machine. Parts are very hard to secure. Not a bad machine , just not easy to get repairs.

That machine has a 2200 engine in it. blocks for diesel or gas is the same. Engine parts aren't for the most part hard to find. About everything else can be. Does it have a de-celerator on it, hydro shift, good tracks, sprockets, rollers, etc. would suspect if the head gasket was blown the hoses on the cooling system would get hard as soon as you start it up and try to over pressurize your cooling system. if its a good machine and you can do the work yourself then I would say try to buy it. Very expensive to have some one else to work on it. Not a bad little machine.

Tracks and drives look good , it is hydro with a clamshell. Can do most of it myself but got a neighbor that'll get me through the tough spots . Thanks again .

If I was making a deal on this I would want to be reasonably sure what is happening with the coolant. The last deal I made like this with a coolant leak it turned out to be a liner issue. I'm OK with that for the low price I paid but it's a lot of work before it's back together again. Sometimes we like to draw conclusions without enough research...it can be as easy as a hose that leaks or water pump but if it's a cracked head or liner we're getting the short end of the stick...unless it was priced right in the first place. A coolant leak can be quite innocent to start with but if the operator was careless and didn't top up the system that's when these serious symptoms can come as a result of negligence.

Big thing here is looks can be deceiving. Someone should have the track specs. Measure them plus take a good hard look at the pins and bushings. It shouldn't be to hard to find engine parts. But parts for the rest may be near impossible find. If the tracks are in spec, sprockets and rollers good and the pins are good, it not being my money, I'd say go for it.

mtny,
Possible source for parts is MinnPar out of Minnesota. Goggle MinnPar HD4 pdf and you will find all part numbers for that crawler. Actual parts may be in short supply. Critical parts are pins, bushings and links. Used this site for help with an HD3 Allis and it was very helpful.

Thanks again for info. Checked it out closely , tracks , pins , sprockets all good. Coolant is leaking externally near as I can tell . Won't stay running though , fuel issues after sitting 2 years . Oil looks good , she's seen some use for sure . Probably gonna offer like 2500 cash see where it goes.
