Hope some one here can help me with this
Bought a 490 jd excavator has rod controls at valve body and is set for backhoe pattern. I would like sae pattern one of the previous owners told me this would have to be done by switching rod controls and not hyd.hoses says it will blow relief valves. Now previous owner has done brave and questionable feats that I have witnessed over past years (ie turn dozer over on its side with large trackhoe just to replace rods and mains.... Uh yeah now you see my reservations) I have never heard of changing rods always changed hoses machine does not have diverted valve Can anyone shed light on this

The control rods are what need to be changed NOT the circuit hoses. Each circuit has its own relief settings and some of the spools are particular to that circuit. You'll not have a happy hydraulic system if you try changing the hoses. It should only involve two rods, boom and arm.
good luck

When people talk about changing hoses it
is generally the pilot control hoses not
the actual lines going to the cylinders
since those have section reliefs usually
to prevent one function from
overpowering another. With your machine
I would swap the linkage unless it was
mechanicaly impossible, in that case a
careful study and resetting of relief
valves would be needed after swapping
hoses.
