small engine?

Forum,
Not a tractor question. Have worked on small engines for years and finally came to one I could not solve. Have a Generac Workhorse 5550 watt generator that floods upon opening the shut off valve. Changed the needle valve and it still does not stop the flood of gasoline out of the throat of the carb. Carb is clean. Looked on line and found some possible reasons for the flooding and non seemed to apply. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

You man need to change the seat. That said, rubber needle tip, or brass needle tip?

If rubber, find a piece of thread and wrap it around the head of the needle, and use it to spin the needle back and forth in the seat. I've had good luck making a rubber tipped needle seat in this way.

If it's a brass tip, spin it if you can, and then use a small hammer to tap it and seat it in.

Beyond this, all I can say is this seems to be a common problem anymore. I've got a carb on a forklift right now that's been rebuilt, and been apart half a dozen times because the needle isn't seating. It might work a dozen times in a row, it might work once. Then you go to start it and it floods. Pull the carb, go over it, and the cycle starts all over again, no rhyme nor reason to it.

Good luck.

NC,
Thanks for the reply. It is a Nikki carb and there seems to be no seat, it is all plastic and the needle seats against the plastic housing. May be that the seat has fallen out. After I posted this situation the best I could do is place a double shut off valve from tank to carb. One shut off is adjusted to barely open so it will not flood and the second is the one that is the main control. I works!! Got my training from the Red Green Show:)

first problem is it is a Generac second is the plastic carb they like to crack on the in side if it had any water in it and it freezes replaced more then one on RV's. one drop of water will do it

PC,
Wish I could adjust the float. The float is made of plastic, not like the old brass floats. No adjustment possible.

when gas goes in air needs to go out -- if air doesnt go out it will hold the float down -- check the carb vent hole -- yes it has to vent -- something that is always overlooked -- Roy
