D6 9U knock

bought a 9U that has an engine knock---my plan to find the cause is to cut open the oil filters and look for metal particles--if i find particles i will remove the block inspection plates and check for play on the rod bearings
if no particles I will run the engine and try to locate with a stethoscope the cylinder that is knocking-then switch the injector to another cylinder and see if the knock follows which would indicate a bad injector
any ideas and thoughts would be appreciated!!

Before you cut the filter apart loosen an injector line one at a time and see if the knock goes away. If it does it is probably a bad nozzle. I have had bad nozzles and it will sound like the rod is ready to out the side it was hammering that bad. Check that first it is easy and quick to do.

thanks--I have been told that before but i am really afraid if it is a piston broken or rod i am afraid of ruining the block if it lets go! I have new filters and gaskets so it would be easy to cut open the filter--i was planning on changing them anyway along with the oil---the other thing is to spin the diesel with the pony and see what oil pressure develops

You could also loosen all the injector lines and tighten them down one at a time till the knock appears. If the knock is there right away with all the injection lines loose it is a piston if not an injector.

it is my understanding that without a proper injection of fuel the cylinder will not fire--and without that explosion at TDC the piston is in a free wheeling mode and all the play in the rod bearings and piston wrist pin will produce a very noticeable knock---I do stand to be corrected on this!

anytime you have a faulty injector shooting fuel into the cyl. instead of spraying it in you will get a knock that sounds like a rod brg that is toast.

totally not so. if you had that much clearance when freewheeling then under pressure she would just fly apart. for example... the old 5.7 litre gas diesel oldsmobile conversion was very famous for this engine knock as they had major injector trouble, and i experienced this knock many times.

for a bad injector just loosen each line one at a time , when the knocking stops you have found the culprit, bad injector.

so what actually makes the knocking sound? is it the fuel igniting but since its not atomized it explodes violently??

basically yes, as the injector tip is not seating or just worn out and there is raw fuel pouring into the cyl. even throwing that cyl. out of time. even a cold diesel on start up will knock and smoothen out as warmed up. but not as loud as one with a bad injector.
