Starter removal in time!!

Forum,
Attempted to remove the starter on the HD3 and found I may have to wait it out. Took time to get to the starter and once there found the bolt/pin with lock nut was way too tight to remove. Being in place for fifty-one years will require a lot of penetrating fluid before removal. The starter still works so I am not going to be in a hurry to break something. When I do remove the bolt/pin I may use a pneumatic air wrench to remove it. Question is does this make more sense than a breaker bar or something similar? Any and all thoughts are welcome.

i have always had better luck with an impact wrench---tighten,then loosen and back and forth numerous times

If it's a stud and nut, can you get a cold chisel to it? If so, find yourself a think sharp cold chisel and give it a whack on at least one side. This will spread the nut and allow it to come off easily.

Dad showed me this trick years, and years ago. I use it all the time, especially on exhaust manifolds where the nuts are usually welded to the studs with rust. Rarely does one ever give any problems after a shack or two to spread the nut.

If you can't get to the fastener, then an impact is your best bet. As dependic says, bump it in forward and reverse to break it loose, and then continue doing the same thing until you hear the sound of the impact change as the fastener starts to free up and move easier.

Good advice...just keep the torque setting low on the gun and let it pound away a few seconds longer. At least this is a half decent size bolt but would be a pain to remove if broken.
