starter removal

Forum,
Have finally come the conclusion I must remove starter on a '65 HD3 Allis. The starter drive is kicking out too soon especially with colder starts. Question is what exactly must
be removed in order to have an easy removal ? More specifically do I have to remove the fuel tank. Any and all thoughts are welcome! Thanks!
