CASE 450 ENGINE REBILD

I have a CASE 450 crawler, with a loader and backhoe on it, and the 188 engine is getting a little tired. I have talked to a few parts houses and the 207 engine is just the same as the 188 except for the bore and stroke, and fuel injector pump. If I just get an overhaul kit for the 188 I can save several thousands over another engine, even a short block or long block. I will replace the torque converter charging pump, the hydraulic pump for the loader and hoe., water pump, is there anything else I should replace while the engine is out? Maybe something in the torque converter???? Also I was going to chain the loader up to the hoe in the raised position so I could get at the radiator and pumps etc. Will I be able to unbolt the engine from the frame and torque converter at that time? Is this a really big job. I have all the tools and a good shop to work in, but never pulled and engine from a crawler, so any pointers will be appreciated. Tell me what you think about the engine 188 or 207. thanks.......Phil H.

I have 3 450s , two are dozers and one is a loader , first of all , go to your local scrap yard and get a piece of rectangular tube that will fit over your hyd . rod I think it needs to be about 29 inches long . Cut one side out , the narrow side , raise your loader all the way up and place the support over the hyd. rod with the loader still up , drill a hole near the barrow under the rod through both side and install bolt and nut , do the same mid way , this will keep the loader frame in air and bolts will keep support from kicking out . My name is Bill , you can call me at (502 ) 314-6435 , I can explain it to you better and about the torque too .

What he said, but make dang sure it's at least 3/8 wall tube, and if possible do BOTH sides. Better safe than sorry....

I've done plenty of CAT's, and a newer Case 850 dozer, but I can't give you any particulars on the 350.

Beyond that, crawlers are typically easy to pull the engine. With the loader arms up, pull the nose, radiator, etc. From there unhook and mark all lines, wiring, etc.

Once everything is loose, the engine and whatever is attached, (TQ, etc) should lift right out. In some cases, you may have to pull the dash also.

Beyond that, feel free to post any other questions, I'll help out where I can, but it sounds like Dozerbill has you covered.

Thanks Wayne, I was going to pull just the engine, but it makes a lot more sense to pull the torque converter along with the engine, especially when the engine mounts are right there. I get tunnel thinking some times, and having never done this before, it gives me an excuse. Or maybe it's just getting old. It's good to hear from some people who have been there and done that. Experience is a great teacher. Phil...

(quoted from post at 21:27:23 02/22/16) WOW....BILL...that's an idea I never thought of. I will give you a call....thanks...Phil
Hey Phil, just saw a 4 and 1 bucket and a regular bucket with a demolition lip in Oregon on Machinery Trader under 450 Case Salvage Tractors .

Hi Bill, I finally found the 4in1 bucket. It looks like it is sprung pretty good. I will call them and see if they are selling it separate, and what they are asking for it. Molalla, Oregon is a pretty good haul for me to go see it. The other bucket isn't what I can use. I'll call and tell them what I am looking for and maybe they have some ideas or keep me in mind. thanks for the help, .............Phil
