Need advice on riveting brake pads on D7E cat!Do you need a special tool to rivet the brake pads on?Was told it has to be an old curled rivet tool to do it correctly.Who would know how it is supposed to be done as I have checked with the cat people in minn and none seem to know who has any knowledge on how it is supposed to be done!As always, Thankyou for any advice or help you guys can give!!Dave A

I did the brakes on a D4 about a year ago. I borrowed the tools from a auto machine shop in town. I drilled the hole for the rivet, then with a special bit, I drill another hole just big enough for the head of the rivet. I then installed the rivet with another tool and a hammer. The whole job took me all morning, but saved a lot over buying brake assembly.

A couple of years ago I needed rivets on a brake band , found out a John Deere Dealer had one in the back shop. I live in South Alabama and the dealer is Smith Equipment in Frisco City . Maybe you can check your other dealers even though they are not CAT , by the way he did not charge me for installing rivets . He said it had been years since he used it .

I've riveted on hundreds of brake linings for cranes, brakes, etc. If you've got semi-tubular rivets, then you need a tool to set them properly. If your using solid rivets, they just need to be hammered enough to get tight and retain the lining, although there are tools, typically dished somewhat, to give them a bit of shape, and keep you from hammering them too much.

Below are links to a few rivet/tool places. They carry sets for the semitubular rivets that need nothing but a standard air hammer to drive them. I've got an actual press type machine I use for the normal stuff, but often there are a few rivets that are situated in such a way they won't set with the machine. In those cases, the ones that go in an air hammer work great. .

If you didn't get the rivets from CAT, I'll tell you this too. You need to run brass rivets instead of steel ones. If you run steel, and let the lining wear too much, the steel rivets will cut the drum, where brass rivets won't. Hanson has a page showing you how to size them to insure what you get is right for the application.

No more rivets than you'll need to do on a set of brakes like you've got, one of these air hammer powered tools would be your cheapest way out as the cost of the tool would be less than the cost of getting someone to do them for you.

Post back if you have any more questions. Good luck.

Here is a great supplier, they were very helpful in regards to an older model of one of their machines I have, specifically the tooling. They may have something for hand tooling and your needs.

Chicago Rivet was a specified Caterpillar supplier, in their special tools catalog I have from the 50's.
