Motor oil for Cat

I have a Cat 12F grader. The manual specifies 30W oil for warm
weather and 20W for cold weather. Can 15W40 be used instead?

as long as it meets the cat engine specs-- yes

There are a few people that run single weight oils and swear by them. But consider that at the time the manuals came out we didn't have the high quality multi-wt oils we have today. If it's got good oil pressure with a multi-wt and blow by isn't a problem, I wouldn't hesitate to run a good diesel rated multi-wt oil.
