jcb alternator wiring

so got some wiring fixed on the 1550 this weekend but still have trouble getting alternator to work. if i jump 12v to W terminal for a split second it charges and the tach works. if i keep 12 v there tach dont work.
i have two big brown wires to the B+ stud but no plug in for the alternator. i can hook a wire for the gauge to the small terminal on the three terminals in the back and the light works as it should. just can't figure out how to excite the unit. someone has been in this before me so not sure if i'm missing something or not. i "think" its a DRA0770 delco, or at least it looks like that based on internet search.
any thoughts on exciting the alternator so it works? or have a pic of one that is hooked up?

This might help
Look at technical bulletin TB 15 at top right.

You need to remove the wire from the W terminal and connect the positive terminal of an AC volt meter, the reading should be 6 volts +,if not it is lightly that the alternator regulator is faulty, this can cause the techo to read when the engine is stopped,if you are having those symptoms take the alternator to the repair shop and have them check it out.
