air horn preheater HD3 Allis

Members,
Is it ok to use ether with an air horn heater on the HD3 Allis? Thought I had read in the past it is not a good idea. Currently have a 1500 watt block heater that helps in below
freezing temps along with the ether. Any and all thoughts are welcome!

Well in MY humble opinion the other poster has it exactly backwards. Not good but either CAN be use with glow plug equipped engines safety. In that the glow plug is in the combustion chamber and all the explosion will be confined to that area. You air box or intake coil heater is simply a hot wire in the intake area. IF you were to heat that area then spray either into the intake ?breather there is a great chance you could have an explosion there in an area not designed for such. Block heater is great and helps prevent engine wear and adds to easy starting.

Just my 74 years of experience.

I based my opinion on my operators instruction for my pony motor old Cats. The pony exhaust runs inside the diesel intake manifold to heat the incoming air--and it does say a small shot of ether is acceptable---on my Cat with glow plugs it specifically says use no ether

Something is odd. We have an HD3, and it will start well into the teens with just the glow plug. If the tank heater is plugged in, glow plug is never needed. The engine with the tank heater plugged in is as warm as an engine in summer, so I don't quite understand why yours doesn't start well. We have never needed ether in any circumstance, but if you do use it, do NOT use the glow plug, this will eliminate the explosion that WILL occur if you use the glow plug.

L,
Thanks for the reply. The only options for easier cold weather starting are the air horn preheater and a 1500 watt tank heater I installed. You say you have a glow plug?? My HD3 is a 1965 version and in the HD3 Allis Minn Parr parts pfd there is no mention of a glow plug. If mine has a glow plug I would like to know where it is. Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks again.

Air horn heater is a glow plug, just one big one instead of 4 small ones essentially. I have always referenced them as glow plugs, didn't realize the book called it something different. Check and make sure yours is heating up, but again, with an engine heater, I would never use it anyway or need to.
