Just worked on tractor and put in new used oil coolers on front of tractor. Oil
has started leaking out of the starter ring gear housing. Is this from pressure on
the converter or do we have converter internal problems?

Thanks, hal

COULD be several things ,the MOST common is the internal seals in the convertor have let go and you are putting more oil in the housing than the scavenger pump can pull out. The pump (IF you can call it one) is the teeth of the ring gear slinging oil out that lower right line. Now sometimes mud can build up in the belly pan and pinch that line to the point that you have a problem like yours but most likely convertor seals. Note many of these tractors have caught fire from just what you are experiencing. That oil in the starter is not good. You can e-mail me direct and I will give you a lot of pointers, years of ih dozer experience.

I worked on a 175 last year and found that the starter does run in oil we lost about 10 gal. when the starter was removed. The starter came back from the rebuilder with a gasket there is a seal between the drive and the starter motor. We had to add 10 gal of oil to the transmission before it would move. If you need a 175 it's for sale

you had 10 gal of oil in that housing you have the same problem .. Should be no more than just a little run out at the least. There IS a seal between the bendix and the armature on the starter but just to keep drip oil from going to the starter.
