looking at a cat D6 9U that has an engine knock. does the d318 engine have lower inspection plates on the block where the rod bearings could be checked without dropping the pan?

It appears to have them on the injector pump side of the block. Interesting/simple question about these, that I struggled to find an answer to LOL ! I looked in a manual for a 4R/5R series, which is a six cylinder and I believe a D318, just after the 2H 3cyl D6600 models, and the photos you can see what looks like inspection covers. I did a search on the web and it appears the same, looks like the block is shaped at a slope, so the covers seem to face you a bit more. Hard to tell from your photo how close that lower steel is protecting the engine, and consider how much room there is. Well at least its not a crawler loader LOL !

Thanks Billy--it looks like it to me also--I posted on the 2 cat forums but never got a reply on them yet

That is surprising, everyone must be busy LOL ! There were a lot of D318's built as the 9U was a popular, and highly regarded tractor.
