Bolt on cleats

Need advice on bolting cleats on track pads. We have a wheel ditcher with oliver tracks with smooth pads. Having problems keeping runs straight. Pads slipping on crop residue. Considering using c channel. What height would you recomend? Would each pad need a cleat or should we skip 2,3 or 4? Thanks!

You would be surprised how much some form of only a 1/2" cleat would make a difference. On one of my Cat 931's (just like a D3) I welded on 5/8" weldable re-bar. I probably had 1/2" thickness left of the original grouser bar that I welded onto so I probably had 1" plus after being finished. The end result was very good and after a number of years there was very little wear on them. I would suggest you do every second pad (with whatever you choose) to start with and you can always do them all later if you're still not satisfied with the results. The deeper the cleats the more mess you make when you turn and traveling on driveways or any landscaping, of course if you are mainly on farm fields it makes no difference.

EricB,
Thanks for the advice. We bolted on 2"x1/2" tall channel on every third pad. Worked very well. Runs are easy to keep straight and speed up the digging.
