Can anybody tell me the short version of how to get the clutch packs out of a JD 40 crawler to replace the disks/plates. If I do this, I will get the manual, just trying to get an idea if I should do it or pass on this one.. old age is making me rethink about the jobs I'm willing to take on.. thanks !! Jo.

It's not hard to do except for breaking the tracks and driving out the master pin. Worthwhile to get a copy of the shop manual. You shud also have a chainfall hooked up with a yoke attached so the ends of the yoke fit into the bolt holes of the final drive housing. The lift can be a little awkward I did this on both sides of my JD1010, also replace the bearings and seals,on both sides. Not a place you want to revisit any time soon. etc.

I would suspect due to the wear you probably can back your adjusters off far enough to take your track off. I have had 3 of them and I got them all off that way. Removing the final drives casings will expose everything. Just depends on how much rust there is as to getting it all out. Are you looking to buy it or already own it. Norm

Thanks guys.. you all confirm my assessment of the job. So it's time to talk with the owner and see what his budget is for the job. I think, he thinks you can just stick a screw driver down in their and pry the disks loose, as dad always said, do it right or don't it at all. Only way to do this job is time and materials.. which may end up way more than he expected. Any guesses as to the time factor, I'm thinking at least 30 hours.
