Allis HD-3 steering clutch

I am having a problem with one of the steering clutches on my HD-3. It will not release. I have had the steering clutches stick before and was always able to get them free by pushing against a stump while holding back the levers. That hasnt worked this time . The right side lever does not move as far as the left side, which is working fine. I took off the seat etc so I could remove the cover to the RH clutch/brake housing. It seems the amount of movement on the right side lever is the free play and a small amount more which is basically taking up the slack in the linkage. The throwout sleeve itself barely moves, which is why the clutch wont release . Nothing I could see looked broken or out of place. Not sure if there is anything else to try short of removing the clutch. Any help/insights would be appreciated.

On my h4 you have to hold your brake and pull back on your clutch at the same time. The clutch pack itself will not completely release. It just takes some of the tension off so the brake can overcome it. My brake bands takes a 3/4 inch wrench to adjust. Do you have a small round cover in the middle of your housing on top. I am not familiar with the h3 machines so it may be completely different. norm

Thanks for replying. I adjusted the brakes on both sides. . The left side has a small cover just enought to adjust the brake as well as the larger cover. The right side has only the larger cover. When working proprly pulling back the steering clutch levers disengages the clutch enough to turn if pushing a little dirt, or if both pulled the machine will stop on flat ground. Now the right side isnt releasing but it acts like the lever does not move back enough to release it. That is why after I tried to adjust the free play in the lever, I pulled things apart to remove the cover and see what was wrong, but couldnt see anything that looked broken/wrong beside the fact that the throwout hardly moves when the lever is pulled. I think I will pull it apart again and see what it will take to remove the clutch pack.

do you have pedals for your brakes and on the outside of you rear case is there a large nut with a large threaded bolt in it. if so that's the adjustment for the clutch. norm

Yes brakes are pedal operated and I have the adjuster on outside of the clutch housing case. I adjusted the brakes when I had things apart and tried twice adjusting the clutch by that adjuster bolt , all it does is change the free play in the lever .

If you think about the steering clutches they are several disc that are held together with springs for tension. They can never be 100 percent solid as they are not connected mechanically. The brake band that when engaged is connected more mechanically therefore it will over come any power the the clutches has. I could be wrong but when people put there dozers against a tree the force of the clutch will over come the brake band therefore it will release. I don't know for sure but it sounds as though your h3 is the same as my h4. Unfortunately to replace the brake band the steering clutch has to be pulled. So its best to replace the brake band, throw out bearing and clutch discs all at the same time. On the bottom of you housing there is like a barrel plug. Later on they put auto drains on them. I put a 3/8 hole in mine. That way any moisture or oil leakage will drain and its not big enough for mice to get in. Moisture is a real bad thing for the bands and clutches. Sounds as though you have a job ahead of you. Go on the internet if you do not have a manual. Old as it is there might be a free download for it. Good luck . Its not a bad job.

JK-NY if you look at the side of the machine at the rear final drive just in front of the rear sprocket and at about 11 o'clock you'll see a roughly 1 1/2" nut with a 1" bolt with no head it has a hole in it that is your clutch adjustment. Loosen the nut which can be a bear, turn the bolt using a drift pin. Check you steering lever being you have the seat off that helps a bunch because you can look in there and see what is happening. Of course one way tightens things up the other backs them off. Hope this helps you out good luck.

Sorry JK-NY I should have read all your post. I see you know of the steering clutch adjustment bolt. The steering lever should be adjusted to 1 1/2" - 1 3/4" from the rim of the tank adjust by the setscrew at the bottom of the lever. Then the clutch should have 3 1/2" of free movement measured from the rim of the gas tank. If the free travel is less then 2" it either needs to be adjusted or the clutch maybe wore out. You shouldn't need the brakes to start a turn the brakes just make it turn faster. I'm also wondering if the springs in the clutch or the finger are bad. I had several springs that were broke.

Hi Donz. I have a H-3, and my problem is the right side won't drive any more, I first thought is was stuck and the clutch won't release, but I think the clutch is gone, my question the book says you can take the clutch out from the top, without taking the track or dive gear off? I am a little afraid to tear into it,
Sincerely , Ron Cutler
