Got the D4 7U running today!

Steps in the process included having to replace the drive belt from the electric start to the pony motor. That's got to be right up there with other engineering mistakes. Got to take the head of the drive off and press it apart because there isn't enough clearance to get a belt on or off.

Think I'm still going to have to go through the pony carburetor, something isn't quite right with it. The steering brakes need to be adjusted. Going to have to wait for the manuals for that.

Congrats!! Great to revive old iron. Why did Cat not use electric start on all equipment. My '41 R2 has a six volt starter that I converted to 12 volts. Is it because the electric
starters did not have enough torque? Just a curious novice question. If possible send a photo of the revived.

2X4, no I pressed the gear head apart and replaced the belt with a standard belt. Don't think much of that design.

MrT, to my understanding the lack of starting aids (glow plugs ECT) and no 12 volt starters lead to the pony motor stating systems. Didn't see direct start engines until much later. For the Cats like mine you can buy an updated electric start system to replace the pony.

back in the old days electric starters didn't have the torque to overcome the high compression of a diesel engine.
when Cat developed a good enough starter there were all 24 volt and then eventually a 12 volt starter
 
Was faster to get a standard V belt. So that's the way I went. Lucky for me I have access to a press. Still a dumb design.

You could still get starting engines on tractors well into the 70's, though direct electric start was pretty much standard, 2 things from the past that were still available was direct drive,(drawbar work) and starting engines, (extreme cold climate operation)
