JD-440 diesel hard start

just got a JD-440 with a gm diesel 2cly with loader for $2500,,runs great but will not start unless I give it a little shot of ether its bin sitting inside not run in 5 years what would make it start hard thanks cdv
 
Short answer, and probably the most accurate that can be given without looking at it....it's a Detroit, and many are addicted to ether.

Seriously, it probably has enough wear in the rings that the compression isn't there to make it fire without the help of ether. As long as you don't over do it with the ether, it's not going to hurt a thing to run it like it is. In fact, if it's been sitting and the rings are sticking a bit, rather than worn, running might help free them up. No guarantees on anything, but I've seen those old Detroits fun for years even after they got the point of needing a boost to get them going, so you should be good to go until it gets to the point it won't even hit on ether.
 
The only other thing you can do is rebuild it and put n35 series injectors in it I believe you have to go with different Pistons also then they start a lot easier if it's not to cold out you can turn it over about 4 revolutions about 5 times then see if it starts
 
I had a 2010 for 6 years. Had to use either from 1st day I had it. Brand new battery and it would start but as soon as the battery lost some of its charge it wouldn't. Personally I would just use the either. If your 440 has a reverser make sure its adjusted and maintained properly. Those are one parts that are extremely hard to find. If it goes out the crawler will still move but you will lose your lower range of pushing/pulling power. I had a 440 once. not a bad little machine although mine was a gas.
 
I had an old Cat D7 and it was always the same way. You got the pony engine started and while engaging it , you put a shot of either in the air intake of the main engine and away it went .
