450 jd track adjuster

Looked at a nice 450jd today but the guy says the seal on the left side adjuster is bad. Is this a big job to repair? Thanks

I think the 450 is like the 350 in that area. If so, it is a very simple project. To compress the seals so I could get it back in, I found a piece of black iron pipe the right size to push on by hand. Hardest part of the job is getting the adjuster out or back in place.

thanks 1970,, I was wondering since they havent fixed it themselves that it might be a major deal. Thanks again and have a great day

I had to replace the adjustor on a 350 many years ago. I tried to do it without splitting the tracks, but that wouldn't work. I didn't want to split the tracks because I thought it would be a big job, but I finally bit the bullet and split them. Turned out to be a pretty easy job after all.

Thanks Dan,, The guy says he has the seal for it....worse case what would this cost in parts?

What model 450 is it? Is it a "straight", A,B,C, etc? There is differences in the adjusters. Is it a later model with SALT tracks(sealed and lubed tracks)? If it is an early one and you turn the little square headed set screw looking bolt out to release the tension, and take it all the way out, there is a little steel ball in there you need to catch if/when you use the blade to push the idler all the way in (easy way to get the most grease out of it, less cleaning). Anyway, after you take the bolt out, before you push it back with the blade, wrap a rag around where that bolt was screwed in to catch that steel ball. This is assuming it IS an early model dozer and has not been updated with a newer style aftermarket yoke/adjuster. Track will have to come off either way, much easier.

Thanks rboots, it is an early one I guess... it has dry clutches.. I took a guy who has a 450c with me to look at this machine...It is an early one..he doesnt like the dry clucth...says the wet clutch on the 450c is much better. Not going to work 50 hour weeks with it.. Is it worth 4000 more to get wet clutch? Little dozer has all new undercarage.. the cleats are still square on top new.. He wants 9000 is that good, bad, about right? Thanks again hand have a great day

Not sure about which models had which clutches, but wet clutches in my opinion are always much better for longevity. I used to see a lot of JD 450's (A,B,C models) at the dealership I used to work at, then probably about 10 years ago I stopped seeing the older models. Used to be quite a few per year come in for something. Then, about 10 years ago up until I quit working there, it might be 2 years before one came in. It might have been that people had a hard time justifying $100/hr for that old of a machine. I always liked the older 450's, really LOVE the 450 H's and J's. Smooth operating dozer. I did ALOT of undercarriage work on them old 450's, adjuster seals, recoil assys, rollers, press in carrier rollers, idlers, turn dry p&b's, install new lubed and dry p&b's. Not sure in value of the dozer, never look at the prices of that stuff anymore since I quit working at the dealer and am no longer in that field of work (thankfully). I believe the old saying was that the UC of track machinery was 75% of the repair costs over the machine lifetime. We have a few old dozers around our farm though, we have a TD6 IH, a TD340, an Oliver HG42, and an IH 500 that I'm not sure if we're going to repair or part out yet. Its good that it has that good of UC, as it is so pricey, that should help out its valuation for the positive.

Thanks rboots,, Im thinking they wouldnt have spent that kind of money on a machine that had other issues. Have a great day

6 way blade?
hook a chain to the blade and idler pull it tight , wire in a block of wood to keep it tight. Just kidding, I would never do that
