JD 350 dozer with carb. What is th function of the 'solenoid' attached to the bowel of the carb. Has a single wire coming off of it. Is this a fuel shutoff?

I suspect you are correct. check the wire and see if it goes back to your switch. If it does then that's probably your hot wire to open the valve. you can start your dozer then remove the wire at the solenoid and see if then engine stops. That will tell you for sure. those solenoids are to prevent your carb from leaking if your needle valve doesn't seat off correctly and basically draining your gas tank. Norm

"those solenoids are to prevent your carb from leaking if your needle valve doesn't seat off correctly and basically draining your gas tank"

NOPE.

They simply close the main/load jet at shutdown to prevent "dieseling" or a "backfire" in the muffler during a hot shutdowm.

If the inlet needle and seat fail to close properly, the carb will still "run over" and the gas will overflow the bowl vent into the throat and drain the tank despite the main jet being blocked off by the solenoid.

Are you basically saying it shuts off the air flow passage in case of a back fire which is probably right. I know some diesel engines have that. norm

No.

The when the solenoid is NOT powered, it extends and a pintle blocks the flow of gasoline from the float bowl into the main or load jet.
