Just bought this Case Payloader and it doesn't have any brakes. Knew that when I bought. This machine has an air pump that runs off the engine via a belt. The belt is missing and the master cylinder is out of brake fluid.
QUESTION----Is this air pump part of the braking system or is it for emergency braking if the engine shuts down???
Thanks for any help with this machine.

Should be air over hydraulic brakes. Should be an air brake pot that applies pressure to the master cylinder. You will need to get the air compressor working so it will build to 100+ pounds. If the treadle valve is working correctly,it should push the master cylinder. The rest of the system is basically the same as your car or truck. Master cylinder pushes brake fluid to the calipers, which apply the brakes. Once you get the air system functioning properly, and the master cylinder is good, check the brake lines/calipers for leaks, and bleed the brakes as you would your car.

MSM has the system described pretty well.

That being the case, what I have found over the years is that you might as well plan to rebuild the system if you expect it to work. The braking system on a wheel loader is usually the last thing anybody puts their money into. When the brakes went bad, they just adjusted the way they did things so they were loading uphill, etc, and kept on working. The result is usually everything is full of crud and inoperable from being left without maintenance for so long. The big problem is going through the whole system usually isn't cheap either....often the very reason no one spent money on it to start with...

If it were mine I'd check out each piece before starting, and get some pricing, just so you know for sure what your getting into. That way you aren't just spending money chasing the weak link. Good luck.

NYS thruway had a lot of W series loaders, at some point they become surplus after serving their tour and end up being bought by contractors. This agency, had pretty decent maintenance programs, and the equipment was usually a good buy. Several outfits I worked for had W-20's, one of them was exactly as you described, I remember working on the brake system on one of these, we lucked out, some minor repairs, top off of the fluid, bleed etc. never thought that one would have brakes again.

Thank you fellas for the thoughts and ideas==much appreciated that you took the time to help an old Michigander...................
