Yard sale find

I found this at a yard sale today. I stepped up to the pay window and gave them $0.25 for the box. There are full set of 8 of the caps and plugs in the box with two different styles of rubber plugs and some fiber tubes. No instructions, but I think I understand what they do. If you notice, there is no zip code on the box, so it is probably pre-1960.

That print style, font, may pre-date the 40's, my guess its WWII era or earlier. Cool find for sure!

Not a bit of plastic in sight, there is better material in the dust caps back then than is in the parts now, very nice find,if you find a part # post it someone may know what they are for.

I can't find a part number anywhere. I am sure these items were for keeping dirt out of the injector system when you take the lines off. I think the caps were to go onto
the outlets from the pump or the injectors and the plugs were for putting into the line to act as a seal.

There are 8 sets of these in the box.

I'm wondering if it was part of, or included with a special tools catalog, Caterpillar had and still does, offer a line of tools, shop equipment for their products, kind of like Ford and Rotunda, same type of deal.

The quantity is interesting, I wonder if each set corresponds to one cylinder? In the 30's they did have a D17000 engine on things like generator sets,I wonder if it was for a V-8 version of that engine?

I'm assuming that the plugs go into both ends of the injector lines. That accounts for the 8 plugs on a 4 cylinder engine.

The 8 caps would probably go on the injector pump tower and on the injectors.

The rubber plugs I'm not to sure where they would go.

If my memory from 40 years ago serves me right, the injectors have a male end on them, but whichever it is there is enough plugs and caps to keep dirt out of the lines and the injector pump as well as the individual injectors.
