Caterpillar twenty two

Hi everyone, I have a chance to buy a 1936 caterpillar twenty two from a guy at work for 500$. It has no blade, no PTO model, and is a crank start. As of right now it's partially taken apart, because the "reverse idler gear" is bad in it. He swears the tractor ran before he took the engine out and the rest of the tractor apart, my big question is and this may be subjective, is it worth trying to make this a running machine or would it be best as parts for another tractor? I've looked online, and it seems in order to replace that gear, I would have to find a parts tractor for it or possibly have one made ($$$$?). I would have to make a blade for it, and probably a cab. Having a blade would mean getting rid of the crank start to run a pump of the front of the motor because there's no pto, I could mount an electric winch to the back and run over the top cable system also. I would only be able to pull start it with the hydraulic pump on there unless I went to an electric start conversion which i'm not sure how easy that is to do either. I'm trying to justify a light use dozer on a budget, for around the farm clean up amongst other things and also because I think it should be saved as well. I'm I crazy for trying to make this work?

you can add a rear mounted pump by modifying the rear case cover and adding a short shaft to a splinted shaft coming out of the transmission---it will only turn when the master clutch is engaged. You will find the machine very tipsy if you add a blade as the extra weight out front and small diameter idlers are not great for trying to make a level push--i had to add a counterweight to my R2--used parts may be found but usually takes a while to find
I myself would try to find a more complete dozer

I don't think its crazy, but if you have a nice undercarriage, and the remainder of the tractor can be built off the track frames and existing components, you should assess everything you can to see if it narrows down as far as being feasible. I'm not familiar with the part "reverse idler gear" is it in the transmission, what powers the final drives, not sure if these have a bevel gear compartment like the larger models, sounds like its dismantled that far though. They're not rare enough to be scarce on salvage parts, ACMOC and ACME antique caterpillar forums are good places to look for resources. Its one thing if the tractor is just plumb wore out, but if you have something decent to build off of, while its apart there is a lot of things you can do to make it really nice, but it will take time and money. For more immediate needs, I'd agree with dpendzic on finding something more complete as you'll need a pto and hydraulic system to power it, as well as mounts to the track frame, push arms, blade and similar hardware. I hate seeing them parted out too, but there is a point where it may be too far gone or needs so much work, then again so does any major project, and we've seen lots of them finished on those forums in the past, nothing crazy about doing it, just a lot of work.

Not really collectable as there are ton of them out there. For use no way you can find something cheaper and better.. Just My 2 cents worth.. 72 years of iron experience. Saw a nice running D2 with blade and electric start sell Sat for $2100.00 More OLD dozers than their are folks wanting them..

Thanks for all the advice guys, I havent been able to look it much because every time i'm over there i'm helping him with other things. It does look like it's in very good shape cosmetically, i'm not sure what he means by "reverse idler gear", but it will drive forward and not in reverse. The engine and other parts are stored in a semi trailer, and the undercarriage is in OK shape. I think i'm going to take your guys advice though, and go with a more complete machine. I think i'm going to put a little more money aside, or maybe sell one of my old tractors and get a d2 or d4 diesel with a blade already on it. He says that if I don't want it, he's going to put it back together and sell it as is needing that gear to be a good runner. I hope it doesn't get scrapped, if I had the money I would save them all haha
