955C starter removal

Starter Removal
So the name of the game is removing the starter Off
the CAT 955C. After taking the belly pan off and
approximately 45 minutes later I got the starter on
the 955 loose. However, my progress was halted
due to a hydraulic pipe running beneath the starter
and a injector pump above the starter leaving me no
way to effectively get the old starter out. Do I have
to take all the hydraulic fluid out and manually move
the pipe to get the starter to drop at the bottom?
Any helpful suggestions gents?

The loader must be down when you opted for taking the belly pan off,if the loader was raised and secure the starter comes off without taking the belly pan off,you should have tow started it for to lift the loader or raise it some other way as the starter comes up,now that its loose and if you have the side guard off tie something to the back end of it and lift it up,you may need to remove the hood if the frame is in the way.

AJ,

Thank you very much for taking time to try and answer my questions. Your assumptions were correct about taking the belly pan off. The loader is on the ground. As you can see from my included picture, I am definitely stuck with this starter. It is too large to fit down next to the hydraulic pipe and it too large to come up next to the injector and it can't go towards the front. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the best route is to unhook the hydraulic pipe from the back (hydraulic fluid bath) and try to winch on the pipe to make room for the starter. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

I never took the belly pan off so I wont comment on what has to be removed, but you are going to have to remove whatever is in the way to get it off.
Good luck

I have never taken off a starter off a 955 C before , but to be on the safe side I would drain the Hyd. oil from the tank , you will still have a lot of Hyd oil from that pipe you must remove . I tried to find out on my PC about your problem , nothing there so far . Well that is what I would do . If you could pressure wash that area would be a plus for you , protect your eyes from falling dirt and grease .

Hey Gents,

I finally got the bugger of a starter out. My only
option was to take the belly pan off and go out the
bottom. To make this project even more interesting,
the starter went out in the middle of the woods
about a 1/2 mile in. We hooked two heavy duty
winches to the pipe, loosened it from the front and
got enough room for the starter to come out
(barely). I really think that was the only option.
Thanks for all of your help

Well done,I hope that when you replace it that it will work, you need to sort the charging and have the old girl on the button,I think you said before that there was no generator on it,you should consider fitting an alternator, when I used to convert those machines at that time it was all generators that was used back in the fifties,we used to change the water pump pulley to a double groove and mount a 24V generator on a bracket that bolted on instead of the old gear driven 6V generator, now it is possible to get the gear driven alternator conversion, messing about with half flat batteries or batteries of low capacity is a sure way to kill a starter, hope the starter solves the start problem.
Good luck

Forgot to mention that in case that is not a factory direct start but a conversion without changing the flywheel ring gear and it still has the helix ring gear on there the starter will need to match, the starter dog has to be helix too so the two gears mesh into each other.
