Case 580K Backhoe

Just picked up a 1994? (I don't remember offhand) Case 580K backhoe. My question is, how do I engage that hook that holds the backhoe up when not in use or travelling or whatever?? It's a metal "hook" that grabs a couple of ears on the boom so I doesn't sag or creep down and you step on this metal bar in the cab to lift it up...that thing works fine but the hoe/boom doesn't back up enough for the hook to grab those tabs....I have to be doing something wrong??

I hope I can explain this clearly . Pull the lever back hard , and just before it stops pulling backward , push it forward quickly .this lets it jerk back fast enough to latch. When I first tried this , it took 20 tries to get it !! And I was working at a dealer !!

You will have to get the knack like Dalex explained to get it to lock up,once its up there is also a knack to get it down again, you will need to push the lever a little towards the down to take the weight off the latch then press on the pedal to hold the latch up and let the boom down by pushing the lever further, its the opposite to what one would think, keep your hands away from the latch, good machines those with no silly computer to be going wrong, hope you got your 450 sorted, good luck with the new machine.

Right on thanks for the info guys! Yeah
AJ I got the dozer going sure enough.
The battery still turns it over a bit
slower than I'd like but it starts it.
When this battery dies I will put a
bigger one in. Just hate having to spend
400 for a battery lol

You said it pretty well But it does not make it slam back hard enough to latch you have to Reverse the direction of the fluid/cylinder as the cylinder bottoms out and then goes the opposite way to latch, same goes when taking it down.. CASE is the only mfg that has this feature and they pioneered it in 1971 with the 580B, all other over center copy cat units just go into transport with out going over center on the cylinders
