I can't answer your questions, but I got to run one back when they were new and thought that it was a nice unit. But then, I do like crawler tractors.

One thing to remember about old dozers there is most likely something that needs to be fixed. If you have some mechanical ability and you have tools to work on them your self then the you may be fine. Some parts are expensive, some aren't bad. Worn tracks sometimes can be used for a long time. Broken rollers, cases has to be fixed quickly. Without hearing the rear end noise its hard to say what is wrong with it. Talk to the owner. I suspect he may no what is wrong with it and has to hire some one to fix it and that can really be costly. Never get in a hurry. Search the internet. You can find a lot of information our there. Once you by it the dozer and all the problems with it is yours. Norm in Missouri

drain some fluid out of each gearbox and examine for metal particles or clutch material---i use a filter cloth to catch the particles

Owned and worked on them from the td8 c, e, G and 9h Normally a clicking would be a bearing down or a toot off the bull gear in final drive. If it is in final drive pretty easy fix if you have to go into the main rear housing more work. As the other poster said DRAIN each final into a paper grocery bag. Lay it out in the sun and after a day you can see if there are fine medal particles. Would be easier to fix if you know which side or where you have to go. Most expensive would be if there is a gear in the transmission causing the clicking. That is not a normal occurrence but I have seen it happen. Get the unit jacked up by backing it up on two blocks the razzing the front with the blade , put a block under the drawbar then knock out your ones under the tracks. Once you have it up you can spin put the unit in gear and clutch each track that way you can determine if it is in the finals or in the main drive. E mail is open if you need more.
