jd 350 bucket tilt cylinder

anyone rebuilt this cylinder? Is the end cap (guide) right or left hand thread? Anyone removed the cap without a spanner wrench, if so what did you use? Anyone ever used heat (torch)? I have my cylinder out and removed the allen set screw buy haven't been able to break it loose, so before damaging anything I thought I'd ask for tips. Thanks in advance
 
I've never seen left hand threads on any of the cylinders I've repacked, so I'd say yours is right hand also.

As far as using heat, yes, many times. If it's stuck, a combination of heat, smacking/shocking it with a hammer, and penetrating oil, will all be your friend.

If you don't have a spanner, a big chain wrench, or a big pipe wrench can often be used. I have also had times when nothing else worked, when I've had to weld a piece to the cap in order to get enough leverage to break it loose.

In the end, anything that doesn't hurt the cylinder but helps get the end off will work.

Must be a 350B or later you have if it's got an Allen grub screw,the 350 had a different type gland that was in two pieces and was held in with a snap ring in the cylinder wall,the best way to undo tight gland nuts is with the cylinder in place as it will be held solid,protect the rod,slacken the two lines to get rid of the pressure,remove the Allen screw and undo the gland,a 36" pipe wrench and length of scaffold tube will usually undo them no matter how tight they are unless some gobs**** put locktite on the threads,then a bit of heat will be may be needed.

When I had mine done at a cylinder shop in Sanford that we use, they heated the end and used a large air chisel.
 
thanks all for the reply. Yes it is a 350B. I had tried a pipe wrench (24") but didn't have a length of pipe with a big enough diameter to use for a cheater. Had not thought about using the impact chisel so I'll try that then move to the heat if necessary. Thanks again
