Case 580 CK Diesel

Case Nutty helped me get the radiator out of my 580 CK Diesel so I could replace the water pump. I have it all back together now and while I was cranking it over to start the electrical just died. The battery has a full charge, not the best battery in the world, but was spinning the engine fast enough to start when the starter circuit just stopped working. Anyone have any ideas or have a wiring diagram of the starter circuit of a 580 CK Diesel?

Try by connecting from the battery terminal on the starter solenoid to the "s" stud on the solenoid with a screw driver or a remote clip on type of start switch to see if you get any response. If it kicks in you may have a problem with the circuit coming from the ignition switch. If you get no response at all check for a poor battery cable connection, can be at the posts or a bad crimp or where it bolts to ground. For testing purposes you can take another battery and booster cables directly to the starter to see if the starter kicks in. When you trouble shoot you want to do all the simple things first before you do more than necessary.

I would try what Eric suggested and if it attempts to start you will know the heavy power side is ok,there are two things that can cause it to appear dead, one is the neutral start switch and the other is the circuit breaker on the start circuit,it may have popped out,I don't have a wiring diagram and cant remember where they are located, make sure its out of gear when you try.

Thanks for the suggestions, it's raining here all day, and the hoe sit's outside, so tomorrow I will give it a try. I cleaned up all the battery connections except for one that looked good. I will take it apart tomorrow. I was wondering about the jumpering across on the solenoid but was not sure where.

AJ, this is an antique, 1970, I think. Would it still have a circuit breaker on the start circuit? There is a start position on the gear shift and I did
check that. I will run continuity through the switch. Thanks

that does have or did new a safety start switch on the trans shifter cover, make sure the connections are tight there and you may even had a bad switch if its still hooked up correctly, I have a diagram I think for the CK just have to take time to dig it out

Thanks for the suggestions and help. I got it started up at noon today. I was a little worried because while it was apart I left the exhaust uncovered and we got a half inch of rain while it was uncovered. I did turn the engine over manually after the rain a couple of times. I am feeling a lot better now.
