Greetings
My 931 will move forward/backward for a few minutes when cold then the transmission seems as though its slipping and stops moving. I think I am loosing pump pressure. Any Ideas.

Thanks

Are you sure there is enough oil in the transmission? The level needs to be checked with the engine running. Level looks good without the engine running while it really needs
several quarts/liters to be added. Another possibility is oil that foams after warm up (if someone put the wrong oil in). My manual calls for 30W oil for the transmission in ordinary
temperatures. For the most part these transmissions are very dependable.

Levels are good. I found the metal screen filter on the back of the tranny. It was full of junk. I'm going to clean it and reinstall tomorrow. I had to change my starter as well. The oil in the bell housing is very milky. I,m going to change it. Any Idea the kind of oil it needs and how to check the level?

This site shows to have at least 4 Operators Manuals for a 931. They are listed under Catapiller, Traxcavator #931. Check your serial number.

The oil in the bell housing is the transmission fluid that circulates through there. Look for a plug under the bell housing but also under the transmission to get it all out. If it's
milky it may have taken in water and that's not good. Once you refill the tranny oil and start the engine check the dipstick under the seat (the dipstick further forward). When the
level is right with engine running you have the right amount in the bell housing as well. If you are in moderate climate conditions use 30W engine oil for diesels. I once had a
backhoe where a lot of water got in the transmission. It had to have a heavy duty flush job as well as a new oil pump and seal because it would not work properly either. If it still
looks milky after being changed it's because what is in the converter can't be drained and it gets diluted into the new oil...if you change it again it cleans it up much better.

Cat now recommends TDTO4 oil for its powershift and wet clutch applications---has much improved friction additives over the old diesel 30w oil

check your manual for transmission filters also--my 941 has a screen for the transmission pump but also filters in another location

Drained the bell housing and transmission. water came out first then the oil. Not good. I'm going to let it drain overnight, add new oil and run it for awhile then dump it and add new oil again. the water looks as though its been coming in on the top of tranny through a small inspection plate that wasn't sealed. This is an older machine. 1976. I think I can get away with the 30 oil
