Cat D4 7u parts availaibility and stuff

Greating, I'm sure there is something of this somewhere in the forum, but I"m lazy and search functions are a pain.

Anyway I seem to have inherited my uncles D4, its a good cat but it has one glaring issue the axle? bearings have gone out on one side... possible eroding the case as well, not entirely sure, since its currently parked 14 miles up a logging road... I'll know soon enough...

If memory serves its a late 40's model.

Also it has Carco maybe hyster? 2 speed winch on it that low gear has gone out on...

The biggest question I have is can I even get parts for this ole girl or am I doomed to end up scrapping her, which would suck as my uncle is still alive just not using it anymore... and unable to fix it up himself.

Also I'm not a heavy equipment machanic per se, I'm just fairly good with a wrench and tenacious enough to figure it out if I need to, in other words I'm not super familiar with dozers, skidders backhoes, tractors yes... dozers not so much.

used parts available , bearings should not be a problem,
go to ACMOC web site and ask for help and parts ,
its not rocket science you should not have a problem to do it your self.

The axle is stationery carrying the sprocket hub on bearings,if the sprocket has play it's a good chance the bearings are shot or worse, get yourself over to the Antique Cat club at the link below.

be sure to get the full serial # of the machine--some parts are different depending on the serial #

Well that is good news!

I'll have to check out the cat club at a later date.

For now I'm concerned about getting it home, From what I've been told she'll probably start, and can still move just not sure how far.

Thankee folks.

Actually a lot of parts are still available from Cat dealers. Just beware they can turn into a money pit in about one half of a heart beat. Paid $ 3750 for mine thinking another $1000 would be all I'd need to get it going, when the parts alone passed $ 5000 I quit adding them up, LOL.. but it sure sound sweet running around my 5 acre lot (sand box).

(quoted from post at 18:54:21 05/01/15) be sure to check the final drive fluid on that side--may be dry. 80-90w gear oil

Funny you should mention that...

Way back when when my uncle bought the thing guy told him be sure to check the fluid levels its got a leak somewhere...

guess where that leak was...

So he figures its been dry since some time in the 70's at least, cleared his 20+ acres with it along with a plethora of other logging jobs, and the occasional dirt moving project. The bearing finally quit about 10 years ago. Its been parked since then and fired up every now and again just to keep the motor wet.

I imagine I'm in for an in depth rebuild here, but the price is right, I hope, as long as I can find some used parts for the critical stuff, Bearings I'll probably buy new, but gears shafts etc, if needed used is fine.

First thing to check is track and under carriage condition. If the tracks are shot then getting it moving is pointless. There are track wear measurement instructions out on the web. Don't be fooled by looking at the grousers and assuming that high grousers mean the tracks are good. The pin and bushing in each link are the wear points. Beyond that, parts for a 7u are pretty easy to locate thanks to the internet. Paying for them is another issue....

If you do need parts, Hector, who posted above, is a 100% trustworthy guy. I've bought parts from him before and he's A-OK.

well then check fluid levels in every compartment---the fuel may have developed algae so check that also--there are additives to cure that.fuel filters may have gotten clogged so check fuel pressure gage when running the pony
if stored outside good chance water has gotten into the gear boxes--can crack the drain plugs a little and see if water or gear oil comes out. steering clutches and main clutches have drain plugs to drain any water or oil that may have leaked in.
