CATERPILLAR MOTOR GRADER

I just purchased a really good CAT 12 8TI motor grader, everything works, sounds, operates just like you would expect, and unreal for a 1951 machine. My question is, do you need to do anything special to set the mole board at the 90 degree angle for cutting a bank, other than just shuttle the blade either full L./R. and raising the tip of the blade to 90 degrees. Is there some other settings or hookup, that I need to do, to accomplish this. Thanks......Phil

Not all motor graders can do that; you need to find a manual and see what it says. It is usually a step-by-step process, with about 3 steps to get the blade nearly vertical on machines that have that capability.

I have a service manual and parts book but neither one says how to do that. The specs. for the blade, like length, lift above ground, side shift, etc. it does give the max. Bank cutting angle as 90 degrees. I will try to see for myself how to do it. The owner said it was capable of doing that but he had never done it. So I was just wondering if someone out there that ran one of these, machines could give me some pointers. thanks.....Phil

I am quiet sure a 8T will not do that , I had a 70D and it would not do that either .

Well.........guess what!!!! You can move the blade to a 90 degree angle for extreme cutting on a bank.....you need to change the telescoping link on the blade.....works fine.......Phil

Phil,
Some years ago I had a 112 grader, 3U series, mine was a 1955 or 56. Although I never did this (the 90 degree for slopes) I do remember, in the manual, seeing how to do this. The 3U 112 and 8T 12 are close to the same except for the engines.

Thanks DWF,
My answer to DozerBill66, is correct, you need to reset the telescoping links on the blade, attached to the circle.
Like you said, it can be done, just not to many people ever needed to do it, except maybe on a construction sight, building a road. I have a road that is cut into a bank, and it needs to be tapered back, because it sloughs off after the winter rain. Being able to taper this bank and put in a barrow pit along side the road will make life a lot better, and a much better road. Thanks for your input.....Phil

Got you by a few years, in the 70's I learned on a 7T built in 1945, serial number 345(!). Started that wretch for almost nine years with a rope because my cheapa$$ stepdad wouldn't buy a battery for it. Yes, you just need to extend the link out- if you look at it real hard, you'll figure out how- but it might take a bit to get the link to break loose and extend. Hopefully it has the later lift adjustment screws so you can adjust the dogs by turning instead of having to pull a shim out- if you get it too tight you'll find all about why they call them hand-knockers. Running 14H's and M's now, and you just flip a lever and air pulls the lock pin, shift the assembly to the side, reset the pin and up the slope you go. The new M-series takes some getting used to, all controls on two joysticks like an excavator, including the steering
