6v battery for John Deere crawler

I've got a 1950 two banger John Deere crawler. It's had an 8v commercial grade/severe service battery in it since I've had it. The battery is almost 8 years old and won't hold a charge anymore. I'm thinking of going back to a 6v battery, which is what the crawler was designed for. Does anyone have a recommendation for what I should be looking for in a brand/grade/type of battery for my JD? Thanks.

If it's been charging good before hand that means someone turned up the juice in the voltage regulator and if you go back to a 6v you'll need to turn it back down. Personally, owning 2 similar crawlers, I add an alternator and go 12 volt negative ground. Makes thing simpler IMO.

The original system was 6v positive ground IIRC.

Thanks for your reply.

This crawler had sat unused for many years on an old farm in a rural area of SW Ohio. A local mechanic who worked on it, suggested putting in the 8v battery, but I don't know if he also made a change in the voltage regulator. I'm not sure what I'd be looking for to know if an adjustment had been made.

The machine doesn't get much use, and I usually disconnect the battery when I'm not using it. I have an 8v trickle charger, which I've used on the old battery. Maybe I should just stay with 8v unless I can figure out if the voltage regulator has been modified??

If you don't use it that much and are satisfied with how it has been then put another 8v battery in it. 8 YEARS is a very good use of any battery. Those trickle chargers will save you money in the long run.

You have a couple of choices, next time you fire it up check the charge rate of the battery with a meter, just buy a new 6 volt regulator or Google Delco-Remy service bulletin 1R-116 if you want to try to readjust the existing regulator.

Thanks to all the above for the helpful advice. I'll probably find another 8v to stick in the crawler. There will likely be another breakdown of the crawler before another battery bites the dust!
