Bucyrus Erie hydralic cylinder for TD9

My hydralic cylinders for my 1954 TD9 are leaking hydralic fluid. I want to rebuild them but the shaft on one of the cylinders has rust pitting. I was wondering what would be the best way to fix the rust problem, can I have them rechromed or what. I believe that if I rebuild the cylinders, and dont fix the pitted one, that it will just start leaking again. Does anyone have any suggestions. I also would like to order a shop manual for the Bucyrus Erie Bullgrader that would cover rebuilding the cylinders and parts. Thanks Eddie Olive

find a hydraulic cylinder rebuild shop or a machine shop and have them make new shafts for them, this is your best and most effective way to go

I wonder why you couldn't just fill all the pits in with belzona then sand the rod smooth. on a side note way I have had pitted scratched damaged rods that didn't leak as long as they have good packing in them.

See if you can just find a new cylinder at Surplus Center. Most are more affordable than repair. Just match dimensions.

I spoke to a hydralic shop and they suggested that I let them rebuild the pitted cylinder with new rod. I guess that is probably the best way to go, kind of expensive though. I thought that I would run it past some of you professionals and see what you thought. Thanks Eddie Olive
