A man on a CASE page I run is having a reoccurring issue with breaking the outer bearing on his 350 final drive if I have the info correct he says it breaks the outer race first then the bearing goes out, I suggested he may have a bent sprocket shaft, I have not ran into this problem before, does anyone have any better ideas for him on what he should look for? I did not ask him if his housing has wear and I am not sure that would cause the bearing race to fracture, he does a have a CASE SM I do believe thank you for any input cnt

The sprocket shaft is a possibility and needs to be checked to take it out of the equation, the bearing mounting areas too for gall marks or out of round, the most likely thing to be causing the problem is the lateral setting, those bearings are ball type,if the correct amount of shims are not used the pressure of the retainer is transferred to the bearing,i,e the inner race can only go so far in till it shoulders on the shaft, the retainer pushes against the outer race the right amount adjusted by shims,if all the shims are left out there is constance lateral pressure on the bearing and it will fail,I seen the outer race split in two,if the shims have been installed correctly the next would be is the sprocket true, someone else had that problem a while back,I advised about the shims and heard nothing since.
