Allis Chalmers HD11E - Starter problem

i have a completely rebuilt 24 volt starter that as been tested twice on the work bench and works great. Once it is installed in the dozer it does nothing. Not even a click from the solenoid. I have completely disconnected all electrical except the batteries (which are brand new). I have completely cleaned the ground contact wire that comes from the neg post of one battery to the frame and the main Solenoid wire that comes from the pos post of the other battery. The two batteries are connect in series. When i jump the "S" post on the solenoid with the Hot post of the Solenoid, NOTHING.. does anyone have any suggestions.

I would be leaning towards a bad ground connection,or internally corroded cables, this is assuming there is no battery master switch in the circuit. If you can, run the ground cable directly to a starter bolt. I would also try to tap the positive cable to the engine block, with the batteries hooked up,to see if you have 24 v going to the starter connection on the cable, it should spark almost like striking a welding arc. Since you have eliminated the remainder of the wiring, the problem lies in the batteries, or the cables going to the starter, since it has tested good.

There should be an isolator switch on the battery ground cable unless it has been removed, have you got power at the starter, the main battery positive cable should connect to the solenoid, there should be a cable from the block or frame connected to the ground terminal on the back of the starter along with a short wire that connects as a ground for the solenoid, the wire from the starter switch should connect to the other side of the solenoid.

AJ - again you saved the day.....i installed a heavy ground wire from the back of the starter to the block, the started kicked in, on the first try.....thank you very much for taking the time to help all of us on this forum. Bob
