I recently purchased 580ck hoe Shuttle works ok going forward but some times it will notgo backwards just keeps wanting to go forward. Linkage seems to be moving the spools. Any ideas?

Is the engine bogging down when this happens, the forward and reverse clutch packs depend on pressure diverted from the control valve to engage them,if the machine is driving forward when the control is in neutral the forward clutch has an issue, either the piston is sticking or the more likely a disc has broken up and has got sandwiched between the others which would keep the forward clutch engaged, when reverse is selected then both clutches are engaged and the engine would bog down,a pressure test would be the first thing I would do after checking the linkage, you need a 0 to 300psi pressure gauge to see what's what.

Hey thanks for the charts! I fired it up today put 2 gallon of hyd fluid in it & it seemed to work fine. Another problem that may have made things go weird is that the brakes are sticking. I think the old girl just needs to be worked some to loosen it up. Thanks for your help!!

I thought the the first thing you would have done is have checked the oil and left it out of the equation, about the brakes check the linkage isn't sticking and grease any joints, see the adjustment is good.

agree with AJ, if the linkages work well after lubing and making sure the return springs are all there, and they still stick you need to pull them apart and replace the internal springs as they can be stretched if the brakes have been hot and will not release the brakes and cause them to stick, you may and I am betting will find other parts that need replacing when you are in there , also if they are leaking oil internally on the brakes it can cause issues as well
