450 case dozer trouble

My 450 dozer is a early 70's and seems to run fine but last week I was pushing dirt and trees and had some problems. The dozer shut down like the motor locked up. I tried to start it and it was very tight like over compression. The only clues I have is that after it sits, it will start and run till the pressure on the torque converter builds, then shuts down again. I also notice a bit of smoke coming under the torque converter. It does not smell like clutch or electrical smoke. I don't know if it has a clutch on the flywheel but everything seems to be turning through the sight holes on both sides. The driveline does turn and turns by hand when not running. I can not get it to move yet. Hydraulic working fine and I've checked and filled all the fluids. Need some help.

It sounds very much like my Case when it spun a connecting rod bearing....may not be your problem however!?

That is not a good sign, take off the engine oil filter and examine it for metal,if it's ran a bearing there will be silver like metal flakes visible in the oil,if its clear and has no knock in the engine the next thing to check is the drive train,as it sounds like the machine is in two gears at the same time,i.e both the forward and reverse clutches are engaged check all the controls and make sure they are all returning to neutral,if that checks out the next I would do is remove the drive shaft between the torque and transmission then see how the engine behaves,I taking it that everything has oil etc.post the serial number if you come back as there are a few of those.

I am away from the machine today but I will get the number. I assume it's the tag on the back of the machine? It's kinda strange because as soon as I shut it off and let it sit, it frees up and starts. I almost dropped the belly and pan to look at the crank. There is no engine noise though. I guess dropping the pan is my best option?

The hour meter shows 2700 hours and is working so it is a little strange if it's a bearing but it was sitting for a long time before I bought it.

Quick update if anyone is reading this. I have settled that the bearing is spun in the dozer motor. I pulled out an extra motor I got. Don't know a thing about the extra motor except it came with the dozer when I bought it. That motor has no signs of any oil leaks or anything. I lifted it up and noticed that it looks like it was painted with a spray can (poorly) and that behind the pulleys and things there was bare metal. The bare metal looks like a chemical dip finish. I looked under the valve cover and I saw bright blue valve guides that appear to be new. Excited that I might have gotten lucky, I removed the oil filter and only found newer looking oil and only enough to make the seal on that gasket. I pulled the oil pan however and now I'm confused. The rod caps and all look new but the little bit of oil that was in there also had something like grease or gel all over the inside of the pan and in the block walls. I'm not sure if that is just old oil? Clear sludge? Grease? Not sure if it is what oil looks like if it has been broken down by freezing temps in the winter? Not sure if I need to disassemble the motor or just wipe it out and drop it in the dozer? Any thoughts would be helpful?

I have bought a couple of military surplus engines that looked like that. They had been rebuilt and coated in cosmo line.

If it's "Clear" and feels greasy, they may have done as I do, use Vaseline as an assembly lube. It's cheap, provides initial lubrication, and
mixes with all petroleum based oils.
