Don't want to start a brand war but how can brand A pickup be rated to pull a trailer 5,000 lbs more than brand C-same size truck and engine-who makes up these trailer ratings??

OK very little has to do with the engine and drivetrain. It's the brake system and suspension that determines weight ratings for the most parts with the frame as a smaller part. That's one of the reasons that you are seeing larger tires as in 17" or bigger as opposed to 15/16". More room for bigger brakes. Gotta remember that semi tractors of yesteryear had less HP and torque than new diesel pickups today.

Friend of mine sells travel trailers and has a spec. book for truck loads. The company would sell any trailer at one time to any person , until a guy showed up with a Ranger to tow his 32 ' home and ended up in the rhubard then tried to sue the company . So it was a new beginning in trailer sales with that book -- too many idiots that don't care about other drivers staying alive .
