Case 580G Backhoe - Project

Like most things I get I buy too old and worn and still pay too much. However, I guess I am stuck with this now.

After finally getting the grease and dirt off 90% of it I found I have a hole in the air tank. I either need a new one or try to find someone to weld this one. Any clues?

Also this tractor has very little power even though it runs great. I have rebuilt the transmission with all new clutch discs and turned pressure plates, even replaced the rings. I don't know if the engine needs rebuilding. How would I tell?

And the most aggravating problem is all the backhoe pins need replacing. I have no idea how to do that. Are there instructions somewhere. I do have all the manuals for it.

You sure it's a 580G it is probably a 680G,the 580G was built without air brakes and had a David Brown engine,it would be ok to braze the air reservoir but if its rusted out have a look at in a truck junk yard for one of a similar size, about the engine power have you serviced the fuel system, check the flow is good coming from the tank, turn off the valve take the bottom section off the electric pump and remove the strainer and wash it,turn on the valve to check the flow, put the strainer and bottom back on,change the fuel filters, sloppy pins, each pin has a bush or bushes in the part that pivots,to change them out it is a matter of removing the pin, moving the joint out its anchor, knocking out the old bushes and putting in new ones, put the joint back in place and use shims to eliminate any side play,if the bosses are worn then its a bigger job cutting the old ones out and welding new ons in.

Well I think it is a 680G. I was trying to remember the number as it is in a different location than I am. And my memory is terrible anymore.

I did change out all the filters when I first got the backhoe but have not checked flow.

J.C., you are the person I got the manuals from for my backhoe. Do you think your tanks would fit a 680G? And how much for them?

On the pin and bushing question, do I have to disassemble the entire backhoe boom to get to all the bushings and pins? Do I lay it down to do that fully extended?

I have never worked on something this big before and I am a little scared.

I do not remove the backhoe, one pin is done at a time, say you are going to replace the pin and bushes in the bottom of the boom, dig the bucket into the ground with the stick straight up,with the engine on low idle maneuver the boom with the hydraulics so the weight comes off the pin, knock the pin out, then maneuver the boom slowly away from the hangers just enough to clear the bushes, knock one of the old bushes out of the hanger, use it and the old pin to make a driver, weld it on the outside only leaving the side that will drive the bush, the driver will drive in the new bushes without damaging them, slide the new bush on to the driver put the driver into the old bush to be removed and in one go the old bush will be out and the new one in,with the bushes in,maneuver the boom back into the hangers, put the pin in,use a pry bar to push it against one side and see what gap,use the shims to get the thickness, half the amount,[i.e if it took four put two in each side],push the pin out so you can get the shims in,then push the pin in from the other side and put the remaining half in,repeat for the other pins.

Do the shims come with the pins and bushings or do I have to make them?

Where would I get the pins and bushings and shims?
