Need axel for 440 Deere dozer...Lavoy or others????

Just discovered this afternoon that the axel on our 440 Deere dozer was broke, right behind the hub. Actually my neighbor discovered it when I let him borrow it, and it quit pulling on that side. Looking at the break it was partially broken for a long while. The break obviously wasn't his fault, but he got the last thumb nail sized piece of goodie out of it.....He drove it down, and, thankfully can get his hands on a roll back to get it back home.

Anyways, I'm now on the lookout for a new axel((( the stub shaft in the bottom of the final drive that the drive sprocket bolts to)))). I figure, worst case, I can machine it down and weld it back up, but the idea of a used one sounds so much easier.

If anyone has a lead on one of them, or knows somebody that might, any information would be greatly appreciated.

I've had good dealings with Burgh Implement of Western Pa. Google 'em. They'll pull and ship.

Try James MacFadden Jr. box 220 Rte 20, Sharon Springs, NY 13459. Phone 518 284 2090 or 2871. They have a large salvage yard and I found them fair to deal with

Wayne,
I have one on hand, depends on your serial number, shoot me an e-mail or call, and I can double check.
Lavoy

The bull gear those go thru had at least 3 different changes to the strength of the hub and also added gear width we found out when repairing ours. So when searching for used parts I'd try and find the latest version as they sure seemed heavier duty.

Wayne,

I metal sprayed several of the JD axles for
Ed at crawler heaven . When the bearing fails
it ruins the bearing and seal surface ,spray
will rebuild the surface without changing the
heat treatment of the axle like arc weld does.

George, what ever happened to Ed? Last I knew he had cancer, I can't find anything about Crawler Heaven anymore.

Hey George, I wish the problem was that simple as I have a spray welder too. In this case, the shaft is actually broken directly behind the hub. Looking at the break, I can see where it had been cracked more than half way through for a while, as evidenced by the sides of the crack being smooth and rusted. I can also see a rougher part that had been cracked, and started to rust, along with the final break which was still shiny.

Thankfully it looks like Lavoy might have me another one.

I know my neighbor was upset that it broke, and wanted to blame himself. But it was obvious, to anyone that knows what they are looking at, that he was just unlucky enough to have it let go on him and not on me. I'm just glad it died in an open, flat spot where they can get a truck to it to load and bring back home, instead of down the hill, in the trees, and beside the pond, where he had been using it the day before.

Thanks. I've got a full week this week, so it might take me a few days to get back over to it and come up with the serial number, but I'll get back with you first chance I get.

I may also need another either another brake band, or maybe lining for the original one. I know I got one for the right side from you several years ago, and it seems I have run out of adjustment on the left side now. Broken or just worn out, I don't know, but it's got to be fixed too.

Thanks to all that answered. I've got a lot to get done this week so it might take me a little bit before I can go anywhere with this, but I appreciate the replies. Wayne
