couple ?s about a cat 941

when i got my dozer it was not charging, took the panels off today to pull the alternator to have the shop check to see if its working or the issue is in the wiring. there is only one wire hooked up to the alternator and thats the battery wire, there looked to be two wires that had been cut along time ago. is this a one wire alt or do the other two wire supposed to be hooked up?
also noticed the fuel primer pump next to the fuel filter is leaking, it has been losing prime and hard to start now i know why. can i buy a repair kit to fix this?
also it is blowing a good bit of black smoke when using it. i have run it 3 days and the oil level hasnt dropped, any ideas what the cause of the black smoke?

That machine may have had a generator originally hence the three wires, the single wire will work fine once it is charging the battery, next time you are starting up note the discharge shown on the ammeter when you are holding it on heat,if all four glow plugs are working it should be pulling at least 20 amps,if it is not one or more of the plugs is not working, each plug pulls approx 5 amps,if it is showing no discharge at all either all plugs are shot or there is a fault in the wiring or relay, don't be tempted to use ether, there are two types of fuel system, the older compact type and the later scroll metering, with the scroll metering it is advisable after stopping the engine to put the throttle back on full,[its wise to do it on any engine] check the vent hole in the tank cap and service the filters, the priming pump needs to be screwed in,if its still leaking it needs seals.
