Bobcat743 V1702 kubota

I am looking at a bobcat 743 with the v1702 Kubota. hours are unknown but the drives have been rebuilt recently as well as lift cyl's re packed and new pins and bushings in the loader. the machine looks good paint wise. the problem is the owner says its very hard to start, he replaced glowplugs and one injector. it blows white smoke at start up. uses no oil or water, its definatly fuel smoke. hes convinced its low compression due to the previous owner using too much ether. any thoughts on the subject. a remaned engine is about 4000. and to rebuild it myself will cost around 3k. anyone know of a good source for a good used motor?

Have you checked the blow by,the hard starting may be due to the glow plugs not working, clip one lead of a test lamp to the glow plug bus bar and the other end to a good ground, put it on heat and see if the test lamp lights and then go from there,if the engine runs good and is not using oil it may ok,knowing the damage ether does why do people use it.

Been a Kubota dealer for years and I expect the guy pretty much has it right. Only other source of white smoke and hard starting might be bad injector or low injector pressure. Your three thousand figure MIGHT be low IF the engine need boring. If it is just hone it out and rings 2 thousand or less will do it.

after talking to the guy im going to assume the gp's are working. he seems pretty sharp. as for the blow by ill know more when I see it run in person. he says it runs better when it warms up but still smokes and had a miss in no 2 cyl. he replaced the injector but hasn't had it running since because its been too cold to mess with it

Kuboto engines are very common in smaller machinery in my neck of the woods, there was injectors used some 12/15 years back that had a built in filter, the filter could block,on test the injector would test ok but it was not delivering the right amount of fuel through the nozzle, when an engine started missing we replaced the injectors in sets and that cured that problem.

are injection issues common in these engines? how much blow by would be considered acceptable in a good running engine.
hopefully I know more when I go out to look at it this weekend

All ever I came across was that one batch, the injectors were identical in every way looking at them, the filter was a bar pressed into the fuel port inside the unit, when it became clogged the fuel would escape through the leak-off and the cylinder would miss, when it warmed up they could run ok,apart from that batch the Kubota is no worse than any other make on injectors, about the blow by,all engines have a bit created by the pistons going up and down, its when its a bluey color that usually means the compression and exhaust gases are leaking down past the pistons,it may by that the piston grooves need recutting and a new set of rings,or worse.

That engine is known for cracking heads, usually across/around valve seats especially if someone has been a little overzealous with ether. They won't use coolant, but will be a SOB to start cold, usually with a miss. New heads are readily available, usually with all needed gaskets for about $900.
