We have a old jcb loader and backhoe,it needs a head gasket repair the thing is we do not know what the engine really is. When we got the machine we were told it was a perkins, but in talking to the people a JCB dealer they say it is a british leyland, but they can not figure out what partd we need for it. Does anyone know about really old JCB.Thanks

The first JCB's were built on the Fordson Major tractor that had the Ford 957E engine,it was used up to the time Ford started to build their own backhoe,JCB then as Roy said started to build on the Nuffield tractor with the Leyland 4/98 engine,[it would be BMC badged at the time],both engines look a little alike, the Ford starter motor is on the left side and the Leyland on the right sitting behind the wheel,if you have given the serial # to the JCB man he will know what is what, the Perkins was not used in JCB backhoes till the 3CX models round 1980,they did use Perkins in a lot of their 360° machines and loader shovels.

old tanker, they made a 3 and a 3C then 3C MkI, MKII and MkIII,the Fram filter book lists the 3 and 3C as having either the Ford 957E or a BMC 10/60 which became the Leyland 4/98 that your's got.

I just brought in a 3cx series II today. 4 wheel drive big tires all the way around. It has a Perkins . Hoe is something like a 214 . Suppose to be a pretty late model machine. If anybody wants it $ 7500.00 here in Tennessee. Open station machine no cab and real good rubber
