Impact wrench clean up

Forum Members,
Have an older CP 1/2 inch drive impact wrench that may need to be cleaned internally. Need to use it up North on the HD3 crawler this spring and feel it is not torquing to full potential. Any hints on dismantling, solvents to use or other general things to do and not do? Any an all thoughts welcome.

A lot of times when ours would get gummy we would run a lot of air tool oil thru them and it sure cleaned them out, got it at NAPA and flooded them with it.

I have an older CP 1/2" drive that did that as well. It wasn't operating at full power and than after that it just stopped working.

I can't seem to find a place that will fix them. I bought a new one but that gun was a good gun. Lots of power when it was working right.

Still have that gun laying in the shop. I'll find a place one of these days! lol

Do as was suggested and flood it with air tool oil. Also make sure the adjuster, if there is one, is set right. Most any time my impact won't work right it's because the kids have been twisting the adjuster.

They aren't that hard to tear down and rebuild. The main thing is get everything in the air motor end good and clean, and make sure that the things that need grease have grease. Often a worn out, or dirty/partially seized bearing is the problem with an impact that's not working right. So its usually a good thing to plan on replacing the bearings once you get inside, regardless of their condition. They are typically standard bearings that can be bought at any bearing house a lot cheaper than the tool repair shops.

Beyond that, take it apart, and keep an eye out for all the pieces as it comes apart. Once apart and cleaned and lubed, reassemble in reverse order. As a friend of ours used to say all the time, "It's not rocket science".

I use ATF in my air tools. Any time one start to act up I put ATF in and apply air and so far all have started to work fine. ATF cleans then out and lubes them up. Year ago I worked for tracker Marine and rebuilt air tools day in day out and wished I knew about ATF back then
