Found an IH excavator model 3960 on craigslist-says bad deutz motor block crackled-$ 4,500-Is this just scrap??

The Deutz F6L912 fitted to the 3960 is an air cooled engine if the block is cracked it more than likely has thrown a rod through the crankcase so the engine is scrap,don't know about the scrap value as I'm the other side of the pond.

bfullmer, my neighbor just bought a 3964B Dresser that needs a swing motor and a few other things. Here is a picture of his excavator that has the IH engine that runs good and he did find a replacement swing motor. He paid a lot less than that for the machine but a swing motor used is about 1700 dollars. He wants to use it on his farm so he thinks its worth fixing. $4500 seems high for a machine that needs an engine just my .o2 cents. Greg

50 + years in the heavy equipment business and if I were in the market for a cheap excavator that is about the LAST one I would consider. First of all when it was new it was not the greatest of all machines. Now years latter parts are hard to find because their were just never that many new ones sold. Then dealer support none. Price is a little more than it will scrap out but in reality scrap is what it is. Find an older 880 case, drott 35/40 or something better than that thing.

For that amount of money your going to spend to get that thing running again you might as well keep shopping IMO.

I am from Northern Ontario and any shovel for sale around here that's under 15 grand is typically an hour and a half from complete death.

I know, I bought one. lol
