what happened?

I recently bought a 5500 Ford backhoe. Runs and works fine. I crank it by touching two wires together. (It came that way) A couple of days ago I was going to let it run awhile, but the temp was in the 40's and it wouldn't crank. So I'm spinning the motor over when after about 15 - 20 seconds it just stops turning over. Touching the wires together produced no response. Haven't been back to the farm to try again. I was wondering if there was a fuse or something that has to "reset" before the starter will turn again.

Touching wires together is only messing, that machine should start from the key,you need to repair that fault, you don't say gas or diesel, the gas model has a starter relay, check the battery cables are tight and clean, check the battery itself, check the cable and wires on the starter and if gas on the relay too, check the fuses, there is a neutral safety start switch so the shift should be in neutral, wires hanging loose can cause the loom to burn out or worse.

I did forget to mention it is a diesel. I tried it again yesterday and touching the two wires together didn't do anything. So the connection is definitely broken.
