HD11 Allis Chalmers

My friend has the newer style Allis Chalmers dozer , square design . The problem is it keeps blowing head gaskets. Question is what would cause this . Your help will be appreciated .

I think he checked the head and block with a straight edge . I will ask him if he investigated the head and block , he may have not .

D,
You may want to remove the head and have it completely checked at a machinist shop for being a perfect plane and also checked for hairline cracks. I believe the term for a thorough check is magnafluxed (sp). If tested and it does not pass it will have to be worked on. We have a '72 Tree Farmer with a 242 Ford diesel that would blow its top at idle.Had it worked on and it ran fine ever since. HTH

Hello I am the owner of this dozer. my friend was helping out. What I have is fiatallis hd11 B it keeps blowing head gaskets, I have had the heads reworked checked, magnafnuxed, straight edge on the block, and it still keeps blowing head gaskets. The only thing i have not done is change the head bolts.[could that be it?] or is it junk head gaskets? problem 2 with my dozer is when I start it up to use it the transmission takes a bit to start pulling normale. the transmission starts to pull and then it kicks out. I haft to work with it and get the heat up in it before the dozer starts pulling good[ when hot the dozer pushes great] If there is any advise i can get will be helpful on my 2 problems. I do have a book on this dozer thank you have a good day.

The question I have had since this thread started is, does the gaskets all blow at the same place or is it random about the cylinder location, etc.

You should check the liner protrusion at four places around the top 90° apart, the protrusion is checked with the liner bolted down on the firewall area where the gasket sits not the top of the liner, the top of the liner should not touch the head,if the head is showing a mark from the liner that liner is loose,if liners come loose usually the counter bore will need to be squared up by recutting the seat and replace the liner,if the protrusion is within specs look for other causes, are all the gauges working,is the cooling system keeping the engine cool enough,is radiator clean etc, check the coolant for air bubbles,I have always reused the head bolts, you should try and sort out the drive problem, make sure any breathers on the powertrain are not blocked causing a vacuum and making the charge pump lose its prime over night, that the suction strainer is clean, the pump is not drawing air and the others filters are clean.
Good luck
