1995 ford powerstroke

ave a 1995 ford f350 dually with 7.3 powerstroke, it has a problem. it starts good and runs good. but when you first start it, it smokes so bad you cant see thr truck for about 10 minutes and is putting a lot of dieserl fuel in the oil and leaking diesel fuel in back of motor and running down the motor, cannot see where it is leaking. is the injectors under the valve pan cover and cam anyone help

Your fuel or lift pump (down in the engine valley below and just behind the fuel filter housing) is going bad. Don't buy an after market fuel or lift pump, Go to Ford and get the pump and the hose kit for it, Its cheaper from the dealer. The hose is high pressure diesel fuel hose and in the kit there are 3 precut pieces ready to put on. Its not to bad a job to change just hard to get to it. Mine went bad and was leaking fuel down the bask side of the engine. If your getting fuel in the oil pan DO NOT Drive IT Till ITs FIXED! Bandit

will that cause fuel to go in the oil, I not driving it. the fuel is running down between the motor and trans, thanks let me know

If the bottom seal on the pump goes bad it will let fuel run down on to the cam and drain down into the oil pan. There is a weep hole on the side of the pump and if fuel is come out of the hole then the pump is bad. That being said there are several places fuel can leak from, The supply fuel hose (from the tank) and return fuel line fittings from the heads back to the pump, The high pressure fuel hoses (3)from the pump to the fuel filter bowl. If I remember right there are 2 10mm bolts that hold the pump on down on the bottom of the valley. If there is fuel in the oil you will need to suck the oil out of the high pressure pump oil reserve galley on the top front of the engine (quart or so) and refill it when you change the motor oil. Let me know if you need help, I will do what I can to help you out. Bandit

Should add if fuel leaks from the pump or lines it will run down the back of the engine and down on the transmission. Bandit.

thanks. it is doing just the way you described, I will check it out and let you know, it will be a few days before I check it out

2 years ago the pump was $69 and the hose kit was $29 from Ford. For some reason parts for a Powerstroke are cheaper from Ford dealer than the parts houses. I got glow plugs from a Ford dealer for $8 each for OEM Parts so when ever I can get OEM parts for mine that's what I get. Its worth a phone call to find out if Fords are cheaper or not. Bandit

will turbo cause fuel to go into oil

I have to say I'm scratching my head right now. I guess I need to ask a few questions. How many miles are on the truck? Are you using the block heater to start it in clod weather? Did it suddenly start smoking at start up? You said it leaking fuel and oil under neath the plate next to the turbo and fuel is going into the turbo hose, Before turbo or after it in the hose? When you started it today did it run smooth or was it running rough? Need more info to get a better idea whats going on with it. I don't think I have ever herd of fuel in the turbo hose before so this is a new one on me. Bandit

I am sorry, about the fuel. it was oil after we got the turbo off. oil is running out of the turbo around the rod that controls the flapper in the turbo. it is leaking on the opposite end of the flapper. just bought the truck. guy told me it had this problem. it has 280.000 miles and smokes bad when first starts but clears up after running, starts good. without been plugged up. but does have fuel in the oil. going to change lift pump that I know is good just to check it out, how do you fix the oil leake in yturbo. the rest of turbo seems good, thanks

You may need a new turbo housing, There is an oil galley that runs close to that flapper shaft and if its wore it may have worn into the oil galley. You will have to take it apart and clean it good and inspect it. The only other thing I can think of on the fuel in oil is the O rings on the injectors maybe going bad and leaking into the cylinder or out into the head. Or maybe a loose injector, Who knows. I think the injector bolts are torked @ 116 inch pounds, Yes inch pounds. If you find bad O rings change them all (all 8 cylinders) Just follow the fuel system to find the leak. Its a pain to do but has to be done. Bandit

thanks, a lot, I am going to try lift pump first which I have an extra one, are the o rings on the injectors special or will o rings work and can you buy o rings separate. can I fix the oil leak in turbo without buying housing by replacing o rings or gaskets, I appreciate the info. thanks and have a good day

The O rings for the injectors are all different sizes (4 per injector) and I don't think you could match them up. Ford sells them in a kit (does 1 injector) or you can get them from a parts store. On the Ford truck form web site a guy posted a good set of instructions on how to do it from start to finish and I found them very helpful. Bandit

thanks, you have been very helpful, one more questions can you purchASE OVERHAUL KIT FOR THE PEDESTRAL WHERE THE TURBO MOUNTS ON, THAT IS WHERE MY OIL IS COMING FROM THANKS

Should be able to go to Ford and get the gasket set for it, And maybe aftermarket will have it. How much fun did you have taking the up pipes off the turbo? I looked at mine when I had the transmission out and there is no room to do it with the transmission in it that's for sure. I am glad you found the oil leak and are getting it fixed. 1 down 1 to go the fuel leak. Bandit

No problem glad I could help. Believe me I know all about the first timer thing, What I knew about diesels went out the window when I bought my 96 Powerstroke. Just like you I had no clue how to work on it or how it worked. Now I understand it and can work on it. See you can teach an old dog new tricks! Bandit
