Ford 4500 hydraulic system

Hey folks.

I am completing an engine rebuild on my 4500
tlb.

This unit has a hydraulic reservoir located in
the left frame member.

This unit has been idle for a long time and I am
concerned that there are contaminants and water
in the system and was wondering what the best
way to handle this issue.

The frame has been repeatedly patched and there
is no drain in evidence.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Brad

If it's a 4500 it has hydraulic reservoir in the left [b:f8ca6ed57e]and[/b:f8ca6ed57e] right subframe (they are connected) and there is another 4-5 gallons in the nose in front of the radiator and above the pump. About 20 gallons total.

The frame drain is roughly below the loader posts. Should be a plug on the left side, inside the subframe and you undo the backhoe line on the right side (which connects to a fitting in roughly the same place the plug is on the left.) Depending where it's parked these may not be much fun to get at.

There is also a metal screen on the outlet of the nose reservoir that requires unbolting the hose fitting (after you drain it) to access and clean, and a large pleated paper filter inside it that is changed from the top cover.

Hey EC.

Thanks for the reply.

I am getting the engine together and I kinda
want to get as much of the crud out of the
hydraulic systems I can before starting 'er up.

I have the nose off the machine so I will check
out the filters you mentioned.

I was cleaning the hydraulic driveshaft tonite
and saw that both u-joints are worn. Gives me a
couple more parts to chase.
